Why engagement rates on X look low, and how to read them

Engagement rates on X are divided by impressions, and an impression is counted whenever a post appears on someone’s screen, including when they scroll straight past it. That makes the base very large, so rates on X tend to look small next to Instagram or TikTok figures calculated on followers or views. Compare X posts with other X posts only.

With the defaults, a post with 120 likes, 18 replies, 25 reposts and 60 bookmarks and clicks has 223 engagements. On 9,000 impressions that is 2.48%. If you count only the public interactions (likes, replies and reposts), the same post has 163 engagements and a rate of 1.81%. Counting likes alone gives 1.33%. The table shows the three versions.

X Analytics counts more than the public numbers under a post. Clicks on links, media, hashtags and your profile, and expanding the post to read it in full, are all engagements in its totals. If your own calculation is lower than X’s figure, those hidden clicks are usually the difference.

For a monthly figure, add all engagements in the month and divide by all impressions in the month. This weights each post by its reach. Averaging the rates of individual posts gives small posts with a few replies from friends as much weight as a post seen by 100,000 people, which can mislead.

Posts with images or videos collect media clicks, and posts with links collect link clicks, so they often show higher totals in X Analytics than text posts with the same public interactions. When you test formats, compare the public-interaction rate as well as the total, so that a format is not credited with clicks from people who only opened an image.

Replies and reposts are the engagements that carry a post to new readers, so track them as well as the total. A post with a modest rate but many reposts often did more for your growth than one with many likes.

How it works

On X, engagement rate is engagements divided by impressions. Engagements include likes, replies, reposts, bookmarks and clicks on links, media and your profile.

Replies and reposts spread a post further than likes; watch them separately.

Compare posts with each other rather than with a universal benchmark: format and topic change the rate a lot.

Questions

Where do I find impressions?

In X Analytics, or under each post on desktop. Use the same source for every post you compare.

What counts as an engagement?

Any interaction with the post: likes, replies, reposts, bookmarks and clicks on links, media, hashtags or your profile.

What is a good engagement rate on X?

There is no reliable universal benchmark. Because impressions include everyone who scrolled past, rates by impressions are often a few percent or less. The useful comparison is with your own median over the last month.

Why are my impressions high but engagement low?

The post was probably shown to many people outside your usual readers, for example in the For You feed, who saw it without stopping. A clear first line and a topic close to your niche usually raise the share of people who engage.

Can I calculate X engagement rate by followers?

Yes, some tools do it to compare accounts. The default post here, with 223 engagements on an account of 5,000 followers, would be 4.46% by followers. Say which base you used, because the two are not comparable.

How do I calculate engagement rate for a thread?

Add the engagements across every post in the thread and divide by the first post’s impressions, since that is where most readers enter. State the method when you share the figure, because other tools may count each post separately.

Are views on X the same as impressions?

Yes, the view count shown under a post is X’s impression count. It counts each time the post was displayed, including repeat displays to the same person, so it is higher than the number of people who saw it.
