Tips
- Bluesky counts characters as you see them, emoji included as one.
How Bluesky counts the 300 characters in a post
A Bluesky post can be up to 300 characters. Bluesky counts characters as you see them on screen (technically, graphemes): an emoji counts as one, even one built from several parts such as a flag or a skin-tone variant, and an accented letter counts as one. This counter uses the same method, so the number here should match the app.
Links work a little differently. The official Bluesky app usually shortens long links in the post text and shows the start of the address, so a link can use fewer characters than its full length. This counter counts links at their full length, which gives you a safe upper bound.
Mentions use the full handle, which on Bluesky can be a long address such as name.bsky.social or your own domain. Mentioning several people can use a large part of a 300-character post, so check the count before you post.
For longer thoughts, reply to your own post to make a thread. Each post gets its own 300 characters, and the first is what most people see in their feed, so put the main point there.
Your profile has limits too: 64 characters for the display name and 256 for the description at the time of writing — check current terms. The handle is separate and can be a domain you own.
| Field | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Post | 300 characters | Counted as visible characters; an emoji counts as one |
| Display name | 64 characters | At the time of writing |
| Profile description | 256 characters | At the time of writing |
Questions
What is the character limit on Bluesky?
A Bluesky post can be up to 300 characters, counted as the characters you see on screen. For longer posts, reply to your own post to start a thread.
Do emoji count as one character on Bluesky?
Yes. Bluesky counts each visible character once, so an emoji counts as one even when it is made of several parts. This counter counts the same way.
Do links count toward the Bluesky limit?
Yes, but the official app usually shortens long links in the post text, so they can use fewer characters than their full length. This counter counts the full link, so if it says your post fits, it should fit in the app too.
Do hashtags count on Bluesky?
Yes. Hashtags are part of the post text and count toward the 300 characters. They also let people find the post by that tag in search.
How long can a Bluesky bio be?
The profile description can be up to 256 characters and the display name up to 64 at the time of writing — check current terms. Your handle is a separate field and can be your own domain.
Can I post more than 300 characters on Bluesky?
Not in a single post. Write a thread by replying to your own post; each reply gets another 300 characters. Keep the first post complete on its own, since many people will only see that one.
How does the Bluesky limit compare with X?
A Bluesky post allows 300 characters and a standard post on X allows 280. The bigger difference is how they count: X counts every link as 23 characters and most emoji as two, while Bluesky counts what you see and the app usually shortens long links. Text that fits on X will normally fit on Bluesky.
