Tips

  • Long captions can add search keywords, but the first line still has to earn the tap.
  • Your bio is short: say what you post and who it is for.

How long TikTok captions and bios can be

TikTok captions can be up to 4,000 characters at the time of writing — check current terms. TikTok has raised the limit several times, so older guides that quote 150 or 2,200 characters are out of date. Hashtags, mentions, emoji, spaces and line breaks all count toward it.

Only the first line or two of a caption show over the video before it is cut, and the video takes up most of the screen. Treat the opening as a headline: say what the video is about in plain words. The rest of the caption is for people who tap to read more and for search.

TikTok search reads caption text, so a longer caption can describe the video with the words people type: the topic, the product, the place, the problem it solves. Write it for a person first. Lists of keywords and stacks of hashtags look like spam and give viewers nothing to read.

Your bio is limited to 80 characters, which is very little. Use it to say what you post and who it is for. Whether you can add a clickable link to your profile depends on your account type and follower count; check the current requirements in the app.

Text you place on top of the video in the editor, and the name and username on your profile, are separate from the caption and bio and have their own limits. This counter is for the caption you type when you post and for the bio on your profile.

Questions

What is the TikTok caption character limit?

At the time of writing, TikTok captions can be up to 4,000 characters, including hashtags, mentions and emoji — check current terms. Only the start shows over the video, so the first line matters most.

How many characters can a TikTok bio have?

A TikTok bio can have up to 80 characters. That fits one short sentence, so say what you post and who it is for. Your name and username are separate fields with their own limits.

Do hashtags count in the TikTok caption limit?

Yes. Hashtags are part of the caption, so every character in them counts toward the 4,000. A few hashtags that describe the video are usually enough.

Do long captions help on TikTok?

They can help people find the video in search, because TikTok reads the words in the caption. They do not make up for a weak opening to the video. Use the extra space for useful context rather than repeated keywords.

Why can’t I add a link to my TikTok bio?

At the time of writing, a personal account needs at least 1,000 followers to add a website link to its bio, while business accounts can add one without that threshold. The rules change, so check your profile settings.

How many hashtags should I use on TikTok?

TikTok does not publish an ideal number. Many creators use a handful of specific hashtags rather than a long list. Pick tags that describe the video’s topic and audience, and let the caption text do the rest.

Does text on the video count toward the caption limit?

No. Text you add on top of the video in the editor is separate from the caption. Only the caption you type when posting counts toward the 4,000 characters.
