Tips

  • Write the first line as a reason to click “see more”.
  • Short paragraphs read better in the feed than one long block.

How long LinkedIn posts and headlines can be, and where “see more” cuts in

A LinkedIn post can be up to 3,000 characters, including spaces, line breaks, hashtags and emoji. In the feed, only the first two or three lines show before “see more”. Depending on the screen and your line breaks, that is roughly the first 150 to 200 characters, and less if you open with very short lines.

Those opening lines decide whether anyone reads the rest. Write the first line as a complete thought that makes people want the next one: a result, a specific problem, a clear opinion. Do not spend it on greetings or background the reader does not need yet.

Line breaks count as characters and also as lines, so a post that opens with three one-word lines shows less text before the cut than one that opens with a full sentence. Once someone has expanded the post, short paragraphs still read better than one long block.

Your headline can be up to 220 characters. It appears under your name on posts, comments, search results and invitations, and in many of those places only the start is visible. Put the most useful part first: what you do and for whom.

Other parts of LinkedIn have their own limits, such as the About section on your profile and comments (about 2,600 and 1,000 characters at the time of writing; comments appear to have been cut from 1,250 in 2026 — check current terms). Articles and newsletters allow much longer text.

Questions

What is the LinkedIn post character limit?

A LinkedIn post can be up to 3,000 characters. Only the first two or three lines show before “see more”, so what fits in that opening matters more than the full limit.

How many characters show before “see more” on LinkedIn?

There is no fixed number: it depends on the device, the screen width and your line breaks. As a rough guide, plan for 150 to 200 characters on desktop and fewer on mobile, and make the first line work on its own.

How long can a LinkedIn headline be?

Up to 220 characters. In many places, such as comments and search results, only the start is visible, so lead with what you do and for whom.

How long should a LinkedIn post be?

No length always performs best. Short posts are quick to read; longer posts can do well when they share something specific and the opening earns the click on “see more”. Compare the engagement rates of your own posts by length to see what suits your audience.

Do hashtags count toward the LinkedIn character limit?

Yes. Hashtags are part of the post text and count toward the 3,000 characters. A few relevant hashtags at the end are enough; long lists add clutter.

How long can the LinkedIn About section be?

The About section on your profile can be up to about 2,600 characters at the time of writing — check current terms. Only the first few lines show before “see more”, so open with what you do and who you help.

Do emoji and line breaks count on LinkedIn?

Yes. Every emoji, space and line break counts toward the limit. Use line breaks to make the post readable, but remember that each blank line near the top pushes your words further toward the “see more” cut.
