Tips
- Put the point of the post in the first 125 characters: that is all most people see.
- Instagram allows up to 5 hashtags per post at the time of writing: use a few precise ones.
How long Instagram captions, bios and usernames can be
Instagram captions can be up to 2,200 characters, which is room for a short essay. In the feed, though, only about the first 125 characters show before the caption is cut with “more”, and the exact cut depends on the screen and on line breaks. Most people decide whether to read on from that opening alone.
Write the caption so the first 125 characters carry the point: what the post is, why it matters, or a question. Put details, credits and hashtags after that. Line breaks make a long caption easier to read, but each one counts as a character, and several near the top push your words below the cut.
The bio is limited to 150 characters and the username to 30. Usernames can use letters, numbers, periods and underscores. The name shown in bold on your profile is a separate field from the username, and many creators use it to say what they do as well as who they are.
Hashtags count toward the 2,200 characters like any other text. At the time of writing, Instagram allows up to 5 hashtags per post (it cut the cap from 30 in December 2025), so check the number in the app if it changes. A few precise hashtags that describe the post usually help more than a block of generic ones. The counter shows how many you have used.
Some characters, such as certain emoji, may be counted differently by the app than they look on screen. If a caption sits right at the limit, leave a small margin.
| Field | Limit | What shows |

| Caption | 2,200 characters | About the first 125 characters before “more” |
| Bio | 150 characters | Shown in full on your profile |
| Username | 30 characters | Letters, numbers, periods and underscores |
Questions
How many characters is an Instagram bio?
An Instagram bio can be up to 150 characters. That is enough for one or two short lines: what you post, who it is for, and what to do next. Links go in the separate links field rather than in the bio text.
What is the Instagram caption limit?
Captions can be up to 2,200 characters, including spaces, emoji, line breaks and hashtags. Only about the first 125 show in the feed before “more”, so put the main point there.
How many hashtags can you use on Instagram?
At the time of writing, up to 5 per post: Instagram cut the cap from 30 in December 2025. Check the app if the number changes. A handful of specific hashtags that match the post is a better use of space than many broad ones.
Do hashtags count toward the Instagram character limit?
Yes. Hashtags are part of the caption text, so every # and letter counts toward the 2,200 characters. Hashtags added in a comment instead do not use caption space.
How long can an Instagram username be?
Up to 30 characters, using letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Shorter usernames are easier to remember, type and say out loud in videos. The display name is a separate field.
Can I add a link in my Instagram bio?
Links typed into the bio text are not clickable, but your profile has a links field that holds several links (up to five at the time of writing — check current terms). Links in captions are not clickable either, which is why creators say “link in bio”.
How long should an Instagram caption be?
Long enough to do its job. Short captions suit posts where the image or Reel speaks for itself; longer ones work for tutorials, stories and carousels people save. Either way, the first 125 characters should make sense on their own.
