Tips
- Pinterest is a search engine: write titles with the words people search for.
How long Pin titles and descriptions can be, and what shows in the feed
A Pin title can be up to 100 characters and a Pin description up to 500. These limits apply to the text you add when you create a Pin; boards, profiles and comments have their own. This counter checks the two Pin fields, because they hold most of the text that tells people and Pinterest search what a Pin is about.
Pinterest works more like a search engine than a social feed. People type what they want, such as a recipe, an outfit or an idea for a room, and a Pin that describes it clearly can keep being found long after you post it. The title and description are the main text that tells Pinterest and searchers what your Pin is about, so use the words someone would search for.
In the feed, titles are often cut after the first few words, and descriptions may not show at all until someone opens the Pin. Put the most specific phrase at the start of the title, for example “Easy weeknight lentil curry” rather than “My favourite dinner this week”.
Use the description to add what the image cannot show: ingredients, sizes, steps, who it is for. Write in full sentences. Long lists of keywords or hashtags read badly, and a plain description serves both searchers and people deciding whether to click.
Alt text is a separate field that describes the image for people using screen readers. Write it to describe the picture, not as another place for keywords.
| Field | Limit | What shows |
|---|---|---|
| Pin title | 100 characters | Often only the first few words in the feed |
| Pin description | 500 characters | Mostly shown once the Pin is opened |
Questions
What is the Pinterest title character limit?
A Pin title can be up to 100 characters. In the feed, often only the first few words are visible, so start with the most specific words people would search for.
How long can a Pinterest description be?
Up to 500 characters. Use them to describe the Pin in plain sentences with the words people search for, and add details the image cannot show.
How many characters of a Pin title show in the feed?
There is no fixed number: it depends on the device, the width of the Pin and the layout. Plan for only the first few words being visible and make them count.
Do hashtags work on Pinterest?
Plain keywords in the title and description matter more for Pinterest search than hashtags, and Pinterest has played hashtags down over time. At the time of writing, check Pinterest’s own guidance before adding them.
Should every Pin have a description?
It helps. A description gives Pinterest more text to understand what the Pin is about and gives people a reason to click. Even one or two clear sentences are better than nothing.
Do Pin titles affect search?
The title is one of the main pieces of text on a Pin, so a title with the words people search for gives it a better chance of showing up for them. Write it for people first and keep it specific.
Do spaces and emoji count toward Pinterest limits?
Yes. Spaces, punctuation and emoji all count toward the 100 and 500 characters. Emoji rarely help a Pin get found, so use them sparingly in titles.
