How the Threads 500-character limit works
A post on Threads can be up to 500 characters. That is more room than a standard post on X and less than a LinkedIn post or an Instagram caption, so text written for another app often needs trimming or splitting before it fits.
Everything you type counts toward the 500: letters, spaces, line breaks, emoji, mentions and links. When a thought needs more room, add more posts to the same thread, each with its own 500 characters. The first post is the one people see in their feed, so it should make sense on its own.
Instead of a list of hashtags, Threads lets you add a topic to a post, which works much like a single tag; at the time of writing, each post takes one topic — check current terms. Pick the topic that best describes the post rather than the broadest one.
Threads has also added a way to attach a longer block of text to a post, with its own, much larger limit at the time of writing — check the app for current options. The 500-character post is still what appears in the feed, so the main point belongs there.
Threads is built around replies. Posts that end with a clear question or an opinion people can respond to tend to start more conversation than plain announcements, so keep a little room at the end for that last line.
| Field | Limit | Notes |

Questions
What is the character limit on Threads?
A Threads post can be up to 500 characters, including spaces, line breaks, emoji, mentions and links. For anything longer, add more posts to the thread.
Do links count toward the Threads character limit?
Yes, links are part of the post text and use up characters. This counter counts them at their full length. Long links take a big share of 500 characters, so put them at the end or in a reply when space is tight.
Does Threads use hashtags?
Threads uses topics instead of a list of hashtags, and at the time of writing you can add one topic per post — check current terms. Any # you type in the text still counts toward the 500 characters.
Can you write longer posts on Threads?
The post itself is limited to 500 characters. You can continue in more posts in the same thread, and Threads has added an option to attach a longer block of text with its own limit at the time of writing — check current terms.
How does the Threads limit compare with X and Bluesky?
Threads allows 500 characters per post, a standard post on X allows 280 and a Bluesky post 300. If you post the same text in several places, write for the shortest limit or adapt it for each app.
How long should a Threads post be?
There is no best length. Short posts are easy to reply to; longer ones work when they share something specific. Make the point in the first line and end with something people can respond to.
Do replies on Threads have the same limit?
Yes. A reply is limited to 500 characters like any other post, so you can paste a reply here to check it. Long replies are harder to read in a busy conversation, so keep them to the point.
